Harold B. Shortt 82 years old of Steelesburg, Virginia went to be with his Heavenly Father January 6, 2017, he was at home surrounded by his loving family.
Harold was born April 16, 1934 in Shortts' Gap, Virginia and was the son of the late Tom and Bertha Ellen Palmer Shortt.
Harold was a gifted electrician and mechanic and enjoyed working for many years for Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation #11 mines. He retired from Pittston Coal Corporation as their Chief Mining Electrician. Upon retirement Harold continued to share his love for ‘fixing and tinkering’ with small engines in his shop at his home. He shared many days with friends, family and his neighbors repairing their lawn and small farming equipment while also enjoying one another’s fellowship. He passed many of his talents to his children and grandchildren and even after his body was physically unable to actually complete the repair he could talk his sons or grandsons through problem repairs with ease. He had an incredible memory and rarely missed a detail. He enjoyed hearing about his family’s days at work and was very proud of his children and grandchildren for being hard workers. Harold was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local # 7327 and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his son, Wayne Shortt, daughters Hope Shortridge, Janet Ratliff, and infant daughter Karen Shortt; son-in-law Bill Mitchell; his grandson Dustin Ratliff; brothers Ramey (Rabbit) Shortt and Ballard Shortt and sisters Ethel White, Maudie Bronson, and infant sister Trula Shortt, and father and mother in-law Ora and Hazel Dye Campbell.
Harold is survived by his loving and devoted wife Charlene Campbell Shortt; sons Mickey (Jennifer) Shortt, Abingdon, VA; Rickey Shortt, Cedar Bluff, VA, Rodney Shortt, Pounding Mill, VA, and Dale (Shannon) Shortt, Pinehurst, NC; daughters Vicki Hearl, Richlands, VA and Tami Mitchell Tazewell, VA and son in-law, Belford Shortridge, Abingdon, Virginia.
Harold is survived by grandchildren, Brandi Norman, Lumberton, NC; Kevin (Stephanie) Shortridge, Fayetteville, NC; Nick (Leia) Shortridge, Hendersonville, TN; Carrie (Cyrus) Ratliff, Knoxville, TN; Lucas and Dylan Shortt, Grundy, VA; Joshua (Kristy) Shortt, Abingdon, VA, Jacob Shortt, Cedar Bluff, VA; Cory Shortt, Anna Maria, Florida; Christian (Megan) Hearl, Blacksburg, VA; Katelyn Mitchell, Tazewell, VA; Eli Hearl, Blacksburg, VA; and Hannah Hearl, Lynchburg, VA. Harold is survived by nine great-grandchildren, Alex Easterling, Adam and Emma Norman, Lumberton, NC; Brennan, Sidney, and Brady Shortridge, Fayetteville, NC, Ian Shortridge, Hendersonville, TN; Kaydan Stanley, Abingdon, VA; and Maggie Grace Shortt, Cedar Bluff, VA and many more children who called him “Popaw” as well as many nieces and nephews.
Harold is also survived by his brothers Walter Shortt, and Tommy Shortt, Cedar Bluff, VA, Otis Shortt and Jason (Joyce) Shortt, Pounding Mill, VA; his sisters Effie Shortt, Richlands, VA; Dorothy (Jack) Keene, Lebanon, VA; Garnie Thomas, Richlands, VA, and his very special sister in-law Norene Shortt, Cedar Bluff, VA, sister in-laws Mildred (Acie) Rasnick, Richlands, VA, Nola Wooten, Mt Olive, NC, Joann Campbell, Doran, VA and brother in-law Ralph Campbell, Richlands, VA.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Stephen Rinehart, Helping Hands Home Health and Hospice, and Friendship Home Medical for their tireless efforts and kindness shown to Harold.
A funeral service will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Monday, January 9, 2017 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel, Cedar Bluff, Virginia with Pastor Phillip Cook and Christian Hearl officiating. Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Claypool Hill, Virginia.
Harold’s grandsons will serve their Popaw as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Mervin Shortt, Mack Osborne, Johnny O’Quinn, Fred Sisk, John Collier, Leondis Horn, Ed Jenkins, Steve Lester, Bernard Shortt, and Tony Armes.
The family will receive friends 6 until 9 P.M. Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Singleton Funeral Service, Cedar Bluff, Virginia.
