Ollie Hubert Leonard, 90 years of age, of Wardell, VA departed this life Saturday, December 17, 2016. Born July 18, 1926, he was the son of the late Frank and Eliza Grizzle Leonard.
A modest man of few words, he taught his children well by the life he lived. Living the golden rule came naturally, respect for others always apparent. Honest and hard-working stories of fellow comrades and friendships were many times shared with the family during the evening meal. Spooky occurrence, dangerous dilemmas and “buddies who looked out for one another” both entertained and inspired those who listened.
He was a master craftsman and carpenter, excellent gardener who loved and respected the outdoors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Atwell Leonard in 2014, siblings, Louvenie Cole, Gilbert Leonard, Thurman Leonard, Edward Leonard and infant sister, Pauline.
Surviving Mr. Leonard are his children, one son, Robin Leonard and wife Karen, two daughters, Lea Ann Chafins and husband Thurl, Lisa Ratliff and husband Chris, one sister, Nova Yates, four grandchildren, Leslie Martin and husband Tim, Jaime Tidd, Jeremy Chafins, and Eliza Dee Ratliff, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Leonard served his county in the United State Marine Corps during WW II from January 1945 through November 1946 in the South Pacific.
Following an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps he began his life-long occupation as an electrician in coal mining, retiring from Island Creek Coal Company in 1989. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America local Union #1374 where he served as secretary for most of his career. Mr. Leonard was a member of the Claypool Hill Church of Christ.
Memorial Services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 26, 2016 at Claypool Hill Church of Christ at Claypool Hill, Virginia with Evangelist Bob Smith officiating. The family will receive visitors after 1:00 P.M. Full Military Rites will be observed. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Claypool Hill Church of Christ, 144 Forbes St, Pounding Mill, VA 24637.
