James H. Burke age 70 of Richlands, Virginia passed away November 20, 2016 at his home. Born December 3, 1945, he was the son of the late Thurman and Orthie Burke. He was a retired coal miner from Consol Energy and a member of the UMWA. He lived his whole life in the Buchanan County and Richlands area and was a member of the Fountain of Joy Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 37 ½ years, Ruby Carol Burke; one sister, Anita Burke Cantrell and one infant sister, Cindy Marie Burke.
Mr. Burke is survived by his wife, Lennie Dowdy Burke; one daughter, Nena Horton and husband Mark of Gray, TN; two grandsons, Jeff Horton and wife Michelle of Kingsport, TN and Skyler Horton currently serving in the United States Navy; two great granddaughters, Annabella Horton and Aliana Horton; one brother, Elmer Lee Burke and wife Elsie of Short Gap, VA; one sister, Inis Mae Short and husband Dannie of Claypool Hill, VA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Letha McGlothlin, Edward Newberry, and Arlene Newberry all of Raven, VA; Randy Newberry and wife Sandy of Limestone, TN; Philip Newberry and wife Virginia of Surprise, AZ; Myrna Beavers and husband Mike of Roanoke, VA; Judy Underwood of Richlands, VA; mother-in-law, Gladys Dowdy of Richlands, VA; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 9:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Virginia.
Funeral Services will be at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 23 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Tim Lester and Pastor Randy Clutter officiating. Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be Roger Monk, Charles Lowe, Bill Stilwell, Jamie Cantrell, Dahmon McGlothlin, and Rick McGlothlin. Honorary pallbearers will be Russell Short, Johnny Billinger, Jerry Dunford, Dr. Michel Bidros and the staff of Helping Hands Hospice.
