Lucy Brett Campbell Gillespie, age 77, of Pounding Mill, Virginia, passed away Wednesday September 7, 2016, at home. Born on November 11, 1938, to the late Archie Brett Campbell and Francis Lucille Seay Campbell, she grew up in Laurel, Mississippi. She graduated from the University of Mississippi and moved to Lexington, Virginia, to teach. She had lived in Pounding Mill, Virginia, since 1975 where she raised her three children, farmed, and taught physical education at Richlands Middle School.
She was preceded in death by her son, James Samuel Gillespie, III, and her parents. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jim Sam Gillespie. She is also survived by one sister Annette Campbell Mauldin, two daughters, Ann Brett Gillespie Strickland and Elizabeth Seay Gillespie McRae, their husbands Sam Strickland and Steve McRae, as well as 6 granddaughters—Katherine Elizabeth and Lucy Caroline McRae and Campbell Suzanne, Sarah Elizabeth, Charlotte Olivia, and Nora-Ann Gillespie Strickland.
Pallbearers will be Brian Froehlich, Camillus Musselman, Curt Crowder, Mike Phelps, Stephen Seale, Dick Phillippi, Steve Reithmiller, and Jeff Gillespie.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Virginia. Services will be held at Richlands Presbyterian Church, Friday, September 9 at 2:00pm with visitation immediately preceding the service.
