“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God”. Matthew 5:8
Roger David Buchanan known affectionately by friends and family as “Dave”, 24 of Lebanon, VA formerly of Richlands, VA, passed away Friday, August 12, 2016 in Lebanon, VA. He was the son of Roger and Charlene Buchanan of Richlands, VA.
We were blessed with David on January 17, 1992. And even though it broke our hearts to lose him, we know the moment he took his last breath here, his next was in Heaven. God says the “pure in heart shall see God” and Dave was very pure in heart. He never met a stranger and loved everyone. He was always willing to help those in need and fed every stray animal that came to his home. Growing up the youngest of his siblings, he was the light of their world. Instead of three sisters, he had three “mother hens,” they doted on him, and spoiled him, and always looked after him.
David loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of the Lewis Fork Hunting Club. If he wasn’t in the woods in his tree stand, or riding his four wheeler along the trails of the mountains, he was fishing the many creeks, rivers, streams and lakes he loved to frequent. He could tell you the best spots and the best lures, and it tickled him so much, to come home with some fish to fry.
He also loved to garden. At a young age, he took up gardening with his dad. Over the years, he developed quiet the “green thumb”. He and his dad would compare notes and trade secrets they used to grow their variety of vegetables and flowers. He loved being able to grow bigger or better than his dad. And would send pictures or come by the house to show off his prize. But David never ate any of the vegetables he grew, other than potatoes. He gave away every vegetable or fruit he harvested. He would give them to friends and family and even strangers. It tickled him to give away, so freely, something he worked hard to grow. But, that was his nature.
David attended Highlight Academy in Raven, VA and graduated from Anchors Academy Home schooling program. He was a member of the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands, VA. Those who preceded him in death are paternal grandparents, David A. and Byna R. Buchanan; maternal grandfather, Charles E. Campbell; and beloved dog of many years and best friend, Neeka. And we know they greeted him when he got to heaven.
Those left to cherish his memory are his parents, Roger Lee and Charlene Diana Campbell Buchanan of Richlands, VA. His three sisters and brothers-in-law, Jennifer L. Buchanan of Johnson City, TN; Jarod and Rebecca Buchanan-Johnson of Richlands, VA; Mike and Lynda Buchanan-Tipton of Fort Smith, AR; his nieces and nephews whom he loved very much; Abby and Kate Johnson of Richlands, VA, and Ana Buchanan and Jack Tipton of Fort Smith, AR; maternal grandmother, Della J. Campbell of Roderfield, WV; and extended family, Lisa Cooper, Charlotte Greenwell, Keila Muncy, Gabriel Cooper, and Geri Cooper all of War, WV. He also has several aunts, uncles, and cousins, and his dog and best friend, Daisy Mae whom he loved very much.
A funeral service and celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 12 noon at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands, VA, with Rev. Marc Brooks officiating. Singleton Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
