James Albert Matney age 69 born in Grundy, Virginia March 23, 1947 passed away on July 13, 2016 to join his mother, Nora Matney, his dad, Jesse Matney, and many brothers and sisters. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Mack Matney, Joe Matney, and Jack Matney; one infant sister, Thelma Matney; five sisters, Mildred Addison, Jeanette Jackson, Geneva Billiter, Sue Helton, and Betty Ray. He lived most of his childhood in Cedar Bluff, VA and his adult life in Arcola, VA in Northern, VA.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Kay Shoemaker Matney of Arcola, VA; his son Jesse Matney of Orlando, FL; his daughter, Kelly Lee of Charles Town, WV; four grandchildren, Shane Moore, Siara Smith (KK), Connor Smith (Smiley), and Liam Emerson-Matney; one sister, Brenda Justus; four brothers, Roger Matney, Bobby Matney, Keith Matney, and Timmy Matney; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
James was a master carpenter working for various top construction companies in Northern Virginia and briefly owning his own construction company, Matney Construction. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
James never met a stranger. If he didn’t know you when he first met you he would know your complete history within a few minutes. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. He will be sorely missed. We will always carry your memory in our hearts.
Funeral services for James Albert Matney will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Virginia with Richard Smith and Jeff Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 9:00 P.M. Friday at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Virginia.
