Mr. James Lawson (Poppy) Keene, age 68 of Cedar Bluff, Virginia passed away Thursday, March 10, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late James and Marie Rife Keene. James was a United States Army Vietnam Veteran and a member of New Life Ministries. He got saved on January 19, 1978 while watching the movie Late Great Planet Earth. He was an honorary member at City on a Hill. He was an employee of Cumberland Security providing services at Clinch Valley Medical Center for the last 14 years. James was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He had a unconditional love for his family, life and Jesus.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Harman Hagy.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years Shirley Mae Keene of Cedar Bluff, Virginia; three daughters Jamie Keene Hays and husband Randy of Salem, Virginia, Kimberly Keene Ratliff and husband Mike of Cedar Bluff, Virginia and Erika Keene Shreve and husband John of Cedar Bluff, Virginia; grandchildren Ryan Michael Ratliff, Jake Evan Ratliff, James Houston Hays, Chelsea Hays, Ethan Shreve, Jillian (baby girl) Shreve; great granddaughter Bristol Hays Graham; one brother Hubert Keene and wife Darlene of North Carolina; one sister Deloris Stilwell of Marvin, Virginia; mother-in-law Ollie Kennedy of Cedar Bluff, Virginia; many family, friends and co-workers also survive.
The funeral service for James Lawson Keene will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2016 in Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Virginia with Rev. David Osborne, Pastor Mike Ratliff and Freddie Kennedy officiating. Pallbearers will be John Shreve, Randy Hays, Adam Horn, Josh Kennedy, Scott Rhinehart, Joe Short, Chad Justus and Caleb McGhee. Honorary pallbearers will be Cumberland Security and the staff of Clinch Valley Medical Center. American Veterans Honor Guard Association will conduct Military Graveside Rites at Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery in Claypool Hill, Virginia.
