Douglas (Doug) William Lawson, age 91, of Mt. Airy, North Carolina formerly of Claypool Hill, Virginia passed away Sunday January 10, 2016. He was the son of the late Paul and Lillian Robinson Lawson. He was a United States Army Veteran of WW II receiving the Purple Heart medal and was a POW. He was a life member of Clearview United Methodist Church and attended Shinning Light Baptist Church at Mt. Airy, North Carolina. He was a member of the Casey-Short VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell County D.A.V chapter 31.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years Margaret Lawson; one daughter Connie Vandyke.
Douglas is survived by two daughters Sue Vandyke of Mr. Airy, North Carolina and Melissa Worrell and husband Kevin of Mt. Airy, North Carolina; one son Jeffrey Lawson of Mt. Airy, North Carolina; six grandchildren C.J. Vandyke, Shane Owens, Amanda Smith, Amie Piccioni, Tracy Bevins and Cindy Strange; five great grandchildren Caroline Owens, Jalei Smith, Ethan Bevins, Wyatt Strange and Mattison Strange.
The funeral service for Douglas William Lawson will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday January 13, 2016 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Virginia with Pastor Paul Griffith officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Serving as pallbearers will be family and members of Clearview United Methodist Church. Casey-Short VFW Post 9640 will conduct Military Graveside Rites.
